AABB

An important blood banking organization formerly known as the “American Association of Blood Banks,” then for over ten years as just the letters “AABB,” but finally rebranded in 2021 as the “Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies.” Founded in 1947 in the United States, AABB is now an international association of people and facilities involved in collection, processing, and transfusion of blood and progenitor cells in over 80 countries.

AABB accredits transfusion services, donor centers, centers involved in production of cellular therapy materials, and a wide variety of other less well-known services and functions. One of AABB’s most important functions is the regular publication of Standards to help member facilities comply with federal industry regulations and guidelines. In addition, the organization interacts frequently with the Food and Drug Administration and the public on behalf of the blood community.
