Donor Incentive

Anything a blood donor receives as a result of donating other than those items they would normally receive from the process. This definition (not original to me) encompasses such things as t-shirts, coffee mugs, and keyrings, and does NOT include such things as juice or cookies that are a normal part of post-donation care.

Donor incentives are important, and are monitored closely by the FDA. In theory, an incentive that is TOO enticing could potentially motivate a donor to be untruthful in order to be able to successfully donate. FDA has published some clear-cut guidelines for acceptable donor incentives, and also has discussed some less clear-cut examples. Please see the FDA discussion on paid vs. volunteer donors for more details.
