Calibration
A procedure that compares results obtained by an instrument or system to a known standard. I have italicized “compares” because at its heart, calibration is just a comparison (people tend to confuse calibration with “adjustment” or “maintenance”, but they are very different things). Calibration is an essential part of a blood quality system, and in fact is one of the “Essential Elements” of the FDA’s “Good Manufacturing Processes” (GMPs).
