In transfusion-transmitted diseases, the time between exposure to an organism and development of symptoms. This time frame is often confused with the “window period” (the time from infection to detection by lab tests), which may be longer or shorter than the incubation period. Two caveats: “Exposure” may not equal “infection”, and symptoms may or may not develop.
