Viscoelastic Hemostatic Assays (VHAs)
Abbreviated “VHA,” this is a category for the two main types of “next generation” coagulation testing, thromboelastography (TEG) and rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM). Though both technologies are not really “new,” both assess coagulation differently than tests like the INR or partial thromboplastin time. They are important to blood bankers because they may be used to help guide transfusion therapy in bleeding patients. See the linked individual discussions above for more information.
